This paper develops a local search approach based on diminishing neighbourhoods for optimizing the planning of a canning line at a drinks manufacturer. The search starts with a very wide range of neighbours to try to avoid early entrapment at a poor local optimum. The neighbourhood narrows as the search progresses in an attempt to home in on a good local optimum with nearly the same value as the global optimum. The results of computational tests are analysed and compared with the branch-and-bound incumbent solution identified after similar computing time, illustrating the promise and robustness of the approach.
